This tutorial will show you how you can achieve an animated blinking eye effect to add some fun and variety to your tags. Please, when doing this effect, only use images that allow you to animate. Your best bet is clipart. If you want to use artist graphics, please make sure to check the TOU (Terms of Use). Many artists' TOU will specifically outline what types of animations, if any, are allowed with their art.
We will be utilizing the following PSP Components:
Copy and Pasting Images
Layers
Free Hand Selection Tool (Lasso Tool)
Flood Fill
Animation
Copying and Pasting Frame
Frame Properties from Frame to Frame
Needed:
Tube of Choice - I used a delightful image created by Suzanne Woolcott.
Clipart Cat Image (or any clipart animal image)
Included in the supplies: Round rug clipart tubed by me and an adorable hand drawn black cat tube created by Melissa. Supplies can be downloaded here.
Free Hand Selection Tool (Lasso Tool) Setting:
Selection Type: Point to Point, Feather 0, Smoothing 0 (Shift)
Flood Fill Setting

Creating the Tag
Step 1
Open up the tube image you will be using, the round rug, the black cat tube, and the tube image you will be using. Also open up a new transparent image 500 width by 500 height.
Step 2
Go to Layers/New Raster Layer and flood fill this layer with either white #FFFFFF or a background color that will match the background of the forum you mostly post your graphic tags. I know in one of my favorite forums, Just Gorjuss, the background color would be an off white, #F6F2E7.
Step 3
Make the round rug active and go to Image/Resize using the percent option at 50%, bicubic and resize all layers checked. Go to Edit/Copy. Make the tag graphic active and go to Edit/Paste as New Layer. If you wish to change the pink round rug to another color, go to Adjust/Hue and Saturation/Colorize and move the slider until you have a color you like.
Step 4
Open up the black cat graphic and resize it by 70%. Copy and paste it to the tag so that the kitty is on the round rug.
Step 5
Copy and paste the tube image to the tag, resizing as needed, and add whatever other elements you wish for your tag decoration.
Step 6
Add your copyright and licensing information and also add the text My Sleepy Kitty (or whatever text you would rather have). Go to Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow and apply the settings from above. Do not add the signature yet - we will do that later.
Step 7
Go to Layers/Merge/Merge All (flatten).
Step 8
Go to Layers/Duplicate
Step 9
Go to the original layer and with your mouse wheel zoom your image so that it is enlarged to about 200 percent. You want to be able to see the eyes of the cat easily. Left click the free hand selection tool (lasso) using the settings from above and carefully go around the outside of one of the eyes. When you finish the first eye, just double left click the free hand selection tool and start doing the same with the second eye.
Step 10
Left click the dropper tool and left click it on the cat's coat selecting a primary color.
Step 11
Open up the layer palette and go to the duplicate layer. Left click the flood fill tool, using the settings from above, and left click the flood fill tool on the selections. Go to Selections/Select None.
Step 12
Save this file as a psp or psd file.
Animation Shop
Step 1
Open up the tag file and go to View/Normal Viewing. Holding down the control key, left click the A key to activate all the frames. Go to Edit/Copy.
Step 2
With your mouse, left click the 2nd frame. Go to Edit/Paste after Selected Frame. You should now have 4 frames.
Step 3
Left click Frame 1 and go to Animation/Frame Properties and type in 55
Left click Frame 2 and go to Animation/Frame Properties and type in 100.
Left click Frame 3 and go to Animation/Frame Properties and type in 65
Left click Frame 4 and go to Animation/Frame Properties and Type in 175
Step 4
Before we continue to save the animation, click the Customize button to make sure you have all the correct settings for this animation. You should see two tabs: Colors and Optimizations
Colors
255 Colors, Optimized Median Cut and Error Diffusion should be checked.
Optimizations
The middle three selections should be checked.
The top and bottom selections - unchecked.
After customizing the animation settings, click Ok and click Next and you will get the following screens:
Screen 1 Animation versus output Size - just click next.
Screen 2 Optimization process - just click next.
Screen 3 Optimization preview - just click next.
Screen 4 Optimization results - click finish.
Step 5
Save the file as a gif file (without the signature text). This will be your tag template. You can later add the signature and resave separately so that you can make additional tags for friends and forum/group members.
Adding Text In Paint Shop Pro
Open up the original sleeping kitty psp file. Go to Layers/New Raster Layer and add your signature. On this same layer, apply the drop shadow setting from above. On the signature layer, go to Edit/Copy. You will be pasting the signature in Animation Shop. Just close the original psp file without making any changes to it.
Applying the Signature in Animation Shop
Step 1
Open up Animation Shop and go to Edit/Paste as New Animation.
Step 2
Make sure your animated kitty tag is now open. Click the Control and A Keys to Activate all the frames.
Step 3
Make your text file active and go to Edit/Copy. Now go to Edit/Propagate Paste.
Step 4
Make your kitty tag active and go to Edit/Paste into selected frame. Holding down the left mouse button, place the signature text exactly where you want it in the very first frame of the animation. Release the mouse button and the signature text should now be in all the frames. Resave your animation with a new name.
